Three things that make IT and OT integration easier
A proactive approach to resolving organizational conflicts and eliminating concerns will help your IT / OT convergence. If you are just starting out or are in the process of adapting, here are three steps you should take.
Understand the priorities of each group to dispel
potential conflict
Prioritizing OT and IT side-by-side is an important first
step. In most cases, the priority lists of the two departments will be the
same. Finding common issues and requirements helps both parties see that the
integration will serve both. Finding shared ground also goes a long way in
alleviating the tensions that personal conflicts can lead to initiative.
At the webinar on IT and IT convergence in the smart
industry: “Reliably bridging the gap between OT, IT and the Internet,” adds
John Fryer, Senior Director of Industry Solutions at Stratus Technologies. that
IT and OT resources are limited and integration will cause a number of common
challenges. "
Invest in exercise to relieve pressure
One of the biggest obstacles to adaptation is fear. Each
group opens their workspace to another, and there may be fears that their
processes will be deemed inadequate. Most of the time, the biggest fear is
failure: “What if I can't do my job well with these new systems? ".
Fryer believes it is imperative that senior management
understands that learning new skills is a necessary and expected part of the
process. By communicating to IT and OT that the management of the company
understands what the learning curve will be and that they are actively pursuing
the learning, it relieves stress and makes the process more efficient in the
long term.
Sell Benefits to Show How Everyone Wins
Your IT / OT convergence will happen simply because it has
to. Shop floor automation and real-time data access are critical to your
business plan. So why waste time selling benefits to your teams? In the end,
the end benefit is a profit that serves everyone.
Communicating to your organization how your particular
department or department will benefit from IT / OT integration creates personal
ownership. From the perspective of your employees, understanding that this
change will enable them to do their jobs better removes fears and motivates
them to get the most out of their learning.
