It's no secret
that requests and machines are becoming increasingly interconnected, allowing
business-critical data to be exchanged. So what does this nasty for the
industrial automation industry, where most of this data is generated at the
edge and away from traditional IT resources? When it comes to IIoT, is it time
to focus on cutting edge technology? The ARC advisory group has released a
market report that asks this and other questions. His research highlighted the
adoption of IIoT and Edge concepts, reasons for adopting Edge, and ways of
planning for Edge.

With ARC
survey data, respondents support the use of high-performance devices that are
reliable and capable of making real-time decisions. They see the Manufacturing
Internet of Things (IIoT) as an extension of the way industrial devices,
machines, controllers, and sensors collect and analyze data.
Interestingly,
60% still plan to use a hybrid approach when it comes to future cloud and edge
investments. So while advanced computing is often an intriguing opportunity,
many people take stock.
This tells
us that this combination of cutting edge and cloud technologies will be the
backbone of the future automation infrastructure.
Reasons
to hug the edge
Respondents
were asked about the operational and infrastructure issues that spark their
interest in deploying state-of-the-art solutions. Many of the answers were
found to include operational questions related to asset reliability and process
efficiency. The survey identified three key needs that drive organizations'
plans for deploying systems and perimeter connectivity:
Analyzing
and control devices
Reducing
data security risks
Increased
process speed / reduced latency issues
These
operational factors “completely override user perceptions of the benefits of
advanced computing, enabling faster, better decisions at the manufacturing
level and bringing them to life,” says ARC.
Planning
for industrial development
When asked
about future plans for the implementation of advanced computing and analytics,
the answer was:
Most of
them expect to go into fact-finding mode next year.
Just over a
third are researching the viability of the benefit to their organization or
will select potential technology providers.
Another
third hope to pilot the program next year.
The majority
of defendants also stated that they expect to acquire new skills or people in
the organization to use advanced analytic solutions. In addition, they expect
responsibility for benefit to be shared between IT and OT, reflecting the
overall trend towards IT / OT convergence.
